Open Streets was inspired by the international open streets movement and the dream of using public spaces to make our cities healthier. In the fall of 2014, a group of Champaign-Urbana organizations came together to bring this movement home. We wanted to take back our streets from cars for an afternoon and encourage everyone to be active and have fun. We haven’t made open streets a reality in Champaign-Urbana yet because we need more funding. We still want to hold the event. Partner with us or donate to help us create active community spaces!

The concept of Open Streets is simple: open the streets to people; close the streets to cars.
Connecting the communities of Champaign, Urbana, and the campus that joins them, CU Open Streets was launched to give people of all ages, backgrounds, abilities and interests a place to be active together.
